NPS Castillo San Cristóbal

Historic Structures Report

Part of a project team led by Liz Sargent HLA and Wiss Janney & Elstner Associates that completed a historic structures report for Castillo San Cristobal, part of the San Juan Historic Site, a complex of fortifications dating back to the sixteenth century. The historic context covered a period stretching nearly 450 years from the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in 1509 to the transfer of the fort from the U.S. Army to the National Park Service during the Cold War. A chronology of the fort’s construction addressed the history of its design, builders, materials, changes over time, and transformation to tourist site.

Naval Base Kitsap,Bangor

National Register of Historic Places Survey

This survey of the built environment at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor evaluated 230 resources, covering a period between World War II and the end of the Cold War, for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility. Resource types ranged from a submarine dry dock to a base chapel, including a variety of light industrial, waterfront, residential, recreational, public works, and administrative facilities. Because of the base’s significance as both a naval ammunition depot and ballistic missile submarine base, the evaluation considered potential historic districts alongside individual eligibility. Ultimately the report outlined a cohesive and comprehensive evaluation framework, provided both historic and architectural contexts, mapped resources and potential districts, and completed Washington Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) historic property inventory (HPI) forms for all resources..
